Thong Tanote
Thong Tanote is a quiet beach on a peninsula in the south-west of Koh Samui. It is a beach with a great sunset and good access to the nearby islands of Koh Mutsum and Koh Tan that offer some good diving and snorkeling. The sea gets deep gradually at Thong Tanote and so it is a good beach for children. The swimming at Thong Tanote beach is not great but it is good for paddling.
The area around Thong Tanote beach is one of the least affected by tourism on Koh Samui. On the beach and the roads in the Thong Krut Bay area there are many small wooden Thai houses, shops and restaurants that offer an insight into what Koh Samui used to be like before the first backpackers arrived on the island in the 1980s. They also offer some great local food at very affordable prices.
Near Thong Tanote is Pangka Village. This is primarily a fisherman's village. It is also an interesting area to walk around and take in the local culture. Just a few kilometers off the coast is the Katen Archipelago. The biggest island is Koh Tan or Coral Island. It also has a small population. There are tour boats going out to Koh Tan and the nearby Koh Mudsum every morning from Thong Krut Pier. Trips include snorkeling, visiting beautiful beaches and sometimes kayaking. Lamai is a 20 minute drive away and Chaweng is a 30 minute drive away from Thong Tanote. For those wanting nightlife and more shopping choices hired transport is essential if staying in Thong Tanote.
