Maenam is a small and friendly town with a 7 km long stretch of fine white sand. The beach has a rich tree line that provides lots of needed shade. The trees also add more privacy to the beach accommodation. The sea gets deep quite quickly, but it is good for year round swimming. The sand is slightly coarse compared to the powdery sand found on Chaweng beach. Dotted along the beach are a number of low key resorts and backpacker places. Maenam is also home to one of the best luxury hotels on Koh Samui, the Santiburi Resort. The Santiburi features Koh Samui's only full size golf course.
Maenam still retains some of its Chinese wooden architecture. While Maenam is not as picturesque as Bophut, the town is more aesthetically pleasing than most others on Koh Samui. There is a good selection of bars, travel agents, bike rental and convenience stores. Maenam also has the Thong Nai Pan Express boat that leaves at 12pm and goes to Haad Rin, Than Sadet and finishes in Thong Nai Pan Noi. Lomprayah also sometimes uses the pier at Maenam. There is sometimes a speed service to Ban Tai in Koh Phangan available from a pier next to the main pier.
Koh Phangan is clearly visible from Maenam and adds charm to the sea view. The proximity between Maenam and Koh Phangan makes Maenam popular with those people who want to attend the Full Moon Party but prefer to stay on a Koh Samui beach with better facilities. If you do intend to stay in Haad Rin beware there is a minimum stay requirement of 4 or 5 days at most places. To find out more about Haad Rin visit - www.haadrinhotelreviews.info
If you are looking for a place with a more relaxed feeling than Lamai or Chaweng that still has plenty of amenities and that is also easy on the budget then Maenam is the perfect beach for you. There are several good budget and mid-range places available.
