Lamai beach is just south of Chaweng on the east coast of Koh Samui. It is the second most popular resort area on the island. There's a long stretch of white sand beach with a number of hotels and resorts.
Lamai also has a thriving town with lots of bars, restaurants, shops and entertainments. It is smaller than Chaweng and easy to walk around. Lamai is busy, especially at night, but it nevertheless has a more relaxed feel than Chaweng.
As with Chaweng, Lamai is a self-contained area with everything that you could need for a holiday. If you do want more shops, supermarkets, restaurants etc. then Chaweng is only a short taxi or Songthaew ride away.
Although Lamai has a reputation for cheaper accommodation than Chaweng, many of the accommodation providers are seeking to upgrade to compete with Chaweng. Lamai also has a reputation for being popular with young people. Some of the luxury accommodation offered on Lamai is as good as on Chaweng.
There are lots of cool bars and nightspots in Lamai. You can find pubs, 'bar beers', discos and even lady boy boxing nights. All nightspots in Lamai close at 2am. After which time everyone heads to Buddy Bar, just out of town that never shuts.
