Laem Set is on the east coast of Koh Samui south of Lamai beach. It is a 20-minute drive from Lamai. The area is very peaceful and one of the best spots on the island to see nature.
The beach at Laem Set is white sand. It is shallow in the water and you can cut your feet on bits of coral. Wearing dive shoes are recommended. There are some sandy parts, however, that are good for swimming. There is a coral reef 100 meters out from the shore that can be reached by kayak. It is a good snorkeling spot but caution must be taken over tides and big waves.
Nearby there are a few interesting attractions. There is the famous Na Muang Waterfall 2.8 miles away and The Butterfly Garden on the neighboring small beach of Natien Beach. It is a garden covered with a net that is full of flowers and colorful butterflies. The star attraction, however, is the Samui Aquarium and Tiger Show next to the Samui Orchid Resort. It has a selection of fish, birds and animals to see. There are a few docile Bengal tigers that put on a show and that are available to touch. The travel site TripAdvisor gives Samui Aquarium and Tiger Show a 96% thumbs down as many consider the place to be unethically treating animals.
For the active there is a kiteboarding center next to the Samui Orchid Resort. The area has very little night life. There are a few high end resorts in Laem Set as well as a good selection of mid-range places to stay. Laem Set attracts families and those who want a quiet beach but near the action in Lamai and Chaweng.
Of cultural interest is the nearby Wat Samret. It is on the 4169 road just north of Laem Set in Hua Thanon village. In a small side chapel there is an impressive collection of stone Buddha statues that are guardians to a white marble Buddha statue that is believed to be very old and from India. It is one of the most important religious places on Koh Samui. On the topic of religion, Koh Samui's only Muslim community is also in Hua Thanon. It is a community that emigrated to Koh Samui from the southern province of Pattani. It is in Hua Thanon that you will find some of the freshest fish on the island, caught by the local Muslim fishermen.
Laem Set is also famous for its alternative medicine and treatments because it is home to the Kamalaya Resort and Spa that provides holistic and wellness courses and facilities in 5 star surroundings. It's wellness facilities and courses are open to non-residents.
