Baan Bang Kao
Bang Kao beach is in the south-east of Koh Samui. The beach is 2 km long and has fine white powdery sand. The south-east is one of the least developed parts of the island. On Bang Kao beach you can find a few mid-range resorts and a handful of local restaurants. It is a very peaceful area. The beach is never crowded. There is a fringe of palm trees to provide shade as it can get very hot at midday. Although not on the west coast, Bang Kao has a colorful sunset that is worthy of a cocktail on the beach.
There is very little nightlife on Bang Kao beach or in the surrounding Baan Bang Kao area. If you want bright lights and lots of people it is a 20 minute taxi or bike ride north up the coast to Lamai beach.
That is not to stay Bang Kao is without interest. On the neighboring beach of Laem Natien there is the Butterfly Garden. It is a large netted area on a hill next to the beach. There are many species of tropical butterfly to see. There's also a great viewing point. In Baan Bang Kao there is Wat Khunaram that houses the 30 year old mummified remains of a former monk. You can also take a longtail boat out to the nearby islands of Koh Tan and Koh Mutsum.
